A lung nodule is a small mass of tissue in the lung, which appears as a spot or shadow on a chest x-ray or computerized tomography (CT) scan. Often these nodules cause no symptoms and therefore go undetected. While most nodules are benign (non-cancerous), some nodules are early signs of lung cancer and require prompt evaluation. Non-cancerous lung nodules usually require no treatment. Your doctor may recommend periodic imaging tests to see if a lung nodule grows or changes over time.
