Sovah Health today announced that its Martinsville campus has joined the Duke Heart Network effective Monday, April 2. The Duke heart affiliation allows hospitals like Sovah Health greater access to the experience and expertise of the Duke Heart Center, which is fifth in the nation for adult cardiology and heart surgery by the US News & World Report in 2016. Sovah Health’s two campuses Danville and Martinsville are the only hospitals in Virginia with this distinction.
“Sovah Health is excited to expand our relationship with Duke Health as Martinsville joins the Duke Heart Network,” said Michael Ehrat, CEO at Sovah Health – Martinsville. “Sovah Health has a robust cardiovascular program that is growing to meet the needs of our communities, and this affiliation will enhance the quality of healthcare we provide.”
Through this affiliation, a multidisciplinary team of experts from the Duke Heart Network will work closely with the Sovah Health cardiovascular services team in Martinsville including cardiologists Deepak Banerjee, MD, Nazim Khan, MD, Jack Painter, MD, and Craig Turner, DO; the Danville team, and the surrounding medical community. Sovah Health will also have access to the latest training and staff education, Duke guidelines and research in heart care.
"Quality is the cornerstone of everything we do at Duke," said Amy Kessenich, MHA/MPA, RN, Senior Director of the Duke Heart Network. “Our team works closely with hospital leaders, staff and clinicians to translate the latest evidence-based guidelines into protocols and processes that we can implement here in Martinsville to meet the community’s unique cardiovascular needs and drive positive outcomes for patients.”
The process to become a Duke Heart affiliate starts with a baseline, comprehensive cardiovascular program review conducted by a dedicated Duke team of experts experienced in developing, sustaining, and growing premier cardiovascular programs. The Duke team conducted their first site visit in Martinsville on April 3 and April 4, 2018. Following the review, Sovah Health and Duke Heart Network develop a collaborative work plan which will drive next steps and define expected outcomes.“Joining the Duke Heart Network is exciting news for Martinsville,” said Nazim Khan, interventional cardiologist at Sovah Health. “We believe that care is delivered best close to home. Our new affiliation with Duke will help us deliver a higher standard of care for our community, so patients and families across our region will not have to travel for high quality cardiovascular care.”
