My Sovah Story - Danville | Candice Speagle

May 05, 2023

What is your role at Sovah Health– Danville?

I am an occupational therapist on the Inpatient Rehab Unit.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?

Growing up, I watched my grandfather suffer due to debilitating disease and poor medical management. The only answers he ever received were “There is nothing else we can do” or “There are no other options”. I made a promise to him and myself that I would make a difference and try to be someone else’s “option” to gain independence, live longer and/or just have a better quality of life.

What is a typical day like for you working in this field?

As an OT on the IPR Unit, I get to eval, assess and treat patients who have just experienced a decline in health and/or function. I see approximately 4-5 patients a day. I spend each intervention session trying to maximize patients’ function, safety and overall independence during selfcare tasks required for their return home.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?

I have worked at Sovah for just over one year. Within the last month, I have started assisting with case management needs on our unit. However, I still get to do some of the OT work on the floor.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?

For the most part, my life revolves around a 3- and 5-year-old outside of work. I stay busy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. We enjoy spending time with our church groups, playing baseball, and traveling. We have an RV and try to get away as often as we can.

I’d have to say that our favorite local spot at the moment is the Science Center. They have so much to see and do (no matter your age) and offer a wide variety of activities for the kids.

What do you enjoy most about working at Sovah Health?

I enjoy the interdisciplinary teamwork at Sovah Health that provides our patients with the best outcomes in their weakest moments. I also appreciate the support I have received from my direct management (on the unit) and the hospital’s upper management. I am encouraged to grow on a professional and personal level, while being provided with the support and resources to make it happen.
