Sovah Patient Testimonial: Karen Oaks

June 15, 2026

As a Nurse Practitioner in the Wound Center at Sovah Health - Danville, Karen Oaks is accustomed to caring for patients. In 2023, she became a patient herself after suffering a cardiac arrest caused by a 100% blockage.

Karen's life was saved through CPR, the use of an AED and the medical care she received at Sovah Health.

"Sovah Health helped me have a second chance at life," Karen said.

Karen described the experience as scary but said the communication and support she received from her care team helped make the situation better.

"The nurses were communicative and informative," she said.

Following treatment, Karen participated in cardiac rehabilitation, which helped her regain the confidence to return to activities she enjoys, including working out at the YMCA and walking local trails.

Today, Karen is back to caring for patients in the Wound Center and remains grateful for the care she received during her recovery.

Her experience also inspired her to advocate for CPR education and increased access to AEDs throughout the community. Through educational events and speaking opportunities, she shares her story to help others understand the importance of CPR and AEDs during a cardiac emergency.

Karen's story is a reminder of the difference CPR, AEDs, timely medical care and cardiac rehabilitation can make. Today, she continues to care for patients, stay active and use her experience to help educated others about lifesaving interventions that can help save lives.
